INTRODUCTION.
BMW Group is taking the next step in the fight against climate change and towards responsible resource management. It is making sustainability and resource efficiency central to the company’s strategic direction. The ambitions are high and BMW Group is the first car manufacturer to have measurable sustainability targets for the whole life of the car: from supply chain through production to the end of the use phase. That is our duty because we feel that premium mobility and sustainability are inseparable. This strategic direction is anchored in all departments throughout the entire company.
The BMW Group has been declared industry leader in the ‘Automobiles’ category by the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Indices. Of all 39 car manufacturers assessed, BMW is the only one to be awarded 80 out of 100 points. Since the launch of this sustainability index in 1995, BMW has consistently topped the list.
“BMW IS RECOGNISED AS THE MOST SUSTAINABLE CAR company IN THE WORLD.”
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
PIONEER AND PACE SETTER
SUSTAINABILITY IS NoT NEW TO US
BMW first began developing electric mobility in the late 1960s. At the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, electric BMW 1602s drove as pace cars in front of the marathon runners.
In 2008, we pulled out of Formula 1 racing. The money and capacity that was freed up as a result were invested in developing new, sustainable technologies. And it paid off.
Since 2006, BMW has managed to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% and the energy consumption per vehicle has fallen by 40%.
